Recently, we sat down with Alma Menchanca, President of ALPFA Portland State, and asked her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say:
R: What’s your favorite quote?
Alma: “To succeed in life you need two things: ignorance and confidence.”
R: Why is this your favorite?
Alma: This quote has inspired me throughout my educational and professional journey of life. There are a lot of people that will always put you down when you tell them about your goals and aspirations in life. Here is where ignorance and confidence have played a role. I have learned to ignore those that tell me that I can’t do something, and I’ve also had the confidence to continue on with my goals and prove them wrong. Also, having a lot of confidence in my skill set and what I have to offer to a company is what really has allowed me to set myself apart from others and build relationships with businesspeople. I definitely look to this quote and remind myself that I have big ideas and dreams and it’s my job to make it happen.
R: What other actions could our readers take to live out this quote?
Alma: Never give up and give each other the benefit of the doubt. Get involved and show people your personality through your actions, whether it’s through volunteer work, leadership organizations, school, work, etc. It’s very cliché, but you can’t just talk yourself up, you really have to show people how you plan on executing and getting things done. If you show people what you are capable of doing the confidence organically happens.
Thank you for the insight, Alma!
